PRINT DESCRIPTION

The print "Urbanist", shows the stages of Odilon Redon's life through the use of symbolism. Childhood, youth and middle age, intertwined with painful memories. The horses in the picture refer to wars, whilst the flowers and women represent the his later stages of art, filled with peace, warmth and beauty. Subtle religious motifs such as the classical church windows, faces of Christ and the Virgin, which are soft and peaceful, symbolise the painter's self-redemption. These motifs reflected intricately on the print divert to Redon's heavy religious influence, occupying an important position in Redon late creations.
